Depending on the circumstances, fevers may warrant a trip to the ER or urgent care. In adults, a fever above 103°F (39.4°C) that doesn't respond to home treatment like over-the-counter medications should be evaluated in the ER. Similarly, in infants under three months, a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher warrants immediate medical attention.
