Understanding Skin Infections – How They Develop & How They’re Treated

Skin infections can manifest in various forms, often resulting from the invasion of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites into your skin. These organisms can exploit wounds, cuts, or bites to penetrate the skin's protective barrier. Conditions that weaken the immune system may also make individuals more susceptible to skin infections.

Common types of skin infections include:

  • Bacterial infections: These often appear as swollen, red, and painful areas on the skin. Impetigo and cellulitis are typical examples.
  • Viral infections: Viral skin infections can cause rashes or growths and include conditions such as warts and shingles.
  • Fungal infections: These tend to occur in moist areas of the body and can cause itchiness and changes in skin color. Athlete's foot and yeast infections are common types of fungal skin infections.
  • Parasitic infections: Parasites can invade the skin and cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from itching and redness to blisters and swelling. Scabies and lice are examples of parasitic skin infections.

At UF Health Central Emergency & Urgent Care, our experienced medical professionals will first diagnose the type of skin infection you have. This process may involve a physical examination, discussion of your symptoms, and possibly laboratory tests.

Once diagnosed, we'll tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs. This could involve prescription medications such as antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, or antiparasitics, depending on the type of infection you have. For certain cases, over-the-counter medications may be recommended. We may also provide advice on home care and lifestyle changes to help manage symptoms and prevent future infections.

Our Emergency & Urgent Care Centers are open 24/7 to treat skin infections.
