Diarrhea

When to Seek Treatment for Diarrhea

While diarrhea may be a common condition, it can also be extremely uncomfortable and potentially dangerous if not addressed promptly. It can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and other complications. At UF Health Emergency & Urgent Care Center, we are here to ensure you receive the appropriate care you need as quickly as possible.

Occasional bouts of diarrhea are common and typically resolve on their own; however, you should seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than two days, if diarrhea occurs after recent travel or antibiotic use, or if it’s accompanied by any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe pain
  • High fever
  • Blood in the stool
  • Signs of dehydration (extreme thirst, dry mouth, little or no urination, severe weakness, dizziness, or lightheadedness)
